This set of PICTURES and book of STORIES have been designed so that children will ENJOY discovering Australia’s history! Like the brave explorers that discovered this great southern land, travel back in time to meet the characters, see the places and learn the lessons of the past.
THE SET OF PICTURES ...were inspired by a desire to share Australian history with my own children and the need for such a resource. Over 140 pictures that are researched, written and illustrated from historical works, the first 100 years. The pictures are fully reproducible for colouring, enlarging, reading and learning within the home or classroom at the appropriate price. (Available to purchase as a download.)
THE BOOK ... The pictures go hand in hand with the book which is full of chapters inspired by the journals, diaries and newspapers of the time. This BIG A4 sized book is a journey through Australian history, discovering the stories of the people and the places of early colonial history. You will re-discover your country and find out what really happened, not just the cold hard facts but the stories of the people and places behind them. What life was like and how much has changed! The discoveries, the many Aboriginal people living all over the land; meeting the Maori people too and visiting New Zealand; the hard journeys across Australia, the struggles; building the colonies, how the country was run; the dramas, the triumphs and the tragedies; the humour too, the things that grew out of it to make Australia, Australian.
SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS: Follow the book along, it has instructions for reading and discovering a picture with each chapter and there are questions and activities at the end of each chapter for reinforcement (answers in brackets for your convenience). While you are reading that chapter of the book aloud the children can perhaps colour and add to their very own homemade Australian history journals along with their own answers to the questions at the end of each chapter.
NB I suggest that parents/teachers pre-read each chapter before sharing with younger or more sensitive children as back then life was rough!
